The number of evangelicals remains high, and their percentage among practicing Christians in America is, if anything, rising. Young evangelicals are not turning to more liberal positions on controversial social issues; in some cases they are becoming more conservative than their parents.… Those who argue that a new American landscape is emerging—one in which conservative evangelicalism of the past few decades is losing numbers and influence—are simply ignoring the data.4

Christian Smith, the director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Society and the director of the Notre Dame Center for Social Research, is the uncontested leader in this field of study of young adults and faith. He agrees with these conclusions of the general stability of young adults’ faith through the last few decades. He finds that “emerging adults today appear no less religious than those of previous decades… when it comes to daily prayer, Bible beliefs and strong religious affiliation,” adding, “Not much appears to have changed.” Thus, “on the whole” he says, “18- to 24-year-old Americans have not since 1972 become dramatically less religious or more secular.”5 Smith adds some additional and surprising good news here:
